"Labour Lake in Winter", oil paint on canvas and egg tempera
This is a painting studied winter scenery and spatial relationship. Different from the typical aerial perspective which sharpens the foreground and blurs the background according to the distance change in the space, in this painting, I tried to simulate what human eyes function in the reality. Human eyes have a changing focus point based on the intention. When we focus on the thing far from us, things close to us will automatically becoming blurry, which makes us have an ability to pay attention. In this painting, I made the small island at the middle ground to become the focusing point of eyes, by putting more details and sharpening the edges (with egg tempera). However, I put less details at the foreground. For the foreground, I generally just captured the main shape. For the background, it becomes blurry again. In this way, my intention is leading the audiences attention around the painting, beginning with the middle ground and stepping to the entire space.
