“Winter scenery of my hometown", an oil painting on canvas
This is a painting for the park near my home in Anshan, China. It is the same location as my lake painting, but this is the winter version. Painting snowy winter scenery is something I hope to try. This is my first time to paint snow. “Snow” is something very magical, in two aspects. First, the color of snow can become very distinctive and saturated according to different lighting situations. Second, snow has its own special and complicated spatial structure. For my painting, I captured a snow ground which walked across by many people, making the structure of the snow even more complicated. Similar to the water, although the surface of snow ground has complicated structures, it is still an entirety. Originally, for this painting, I tried to study and use the impressionism style. I observed a lot of paintings from Monet. Monet’s snow paintings, like his other paintings, have an overall bias on blue and purple tones. The light part of the snow has a yellow color which creates the effect of complementary color. I also studied works from some contemporary Russian painters like Vagin Evgeny. These paintings use very saturated colors to depict snow, which I also tried in this painting. I do want to say unfortunately this painting is not Impressionism at all, and I still need to do more research on the 18th-century Impressionism style for sure. In the future, I really want to try the impressionism style. Besides, I am also planning to do a long-term life painting about winter scenery next winter, which will be so much fun!
